Lloyd aka ‘DJ Barkzzz’ is a motivational speaker, community leader and DJ living with a disability in Alexandra township. When a 21 day lockdown period was announced for South Africa, Lloyd asked himself how he can continue being of service to those in need. He goes live every Friday, Saturday and Sunday with a DJ set on Facebook and Instagram, where he shares messaging specifically for groups considered to be more vulnerable to COVID-19 infection. He motivates those with disabilities, diabetes, HIV, and the elderly to stay positive during the lockdown. He has also initiated efforts to collect and distribute food parcels that support those with disabilities during these difficult times.
FACTS & DEFINITIONS:
Community preparedness planning for COVID-19 should include older adults and people with disabilities, and the organizations that support them in their communities, to ensure their needs are taken into consideration.
- Many of these individuals live in the community, and many depend on services and support provided in their homes or in the community to maintain their health and independence.
- Let older adults and people with disabilities know it is common for people to feel distressed during a crisis. Remind them that asking for and accepting help is a sign of strength.
